The Third Eye, or Mind’s Eye, is also known as Ajna chakra, an invisible eye located on the forehead between the brows and up a little. This chakra provides us with intuition, insight, foresight and perception. It is the gateway to inner awareness and higher consciousness. When it’s clear, one will experience mental clarity and improved concentration.
When the third eye is blocked, the opposite happens, one feels uninspired with a lack of motivation. It can leave you feeling detached from others and disconnected from intuition. Other signs of blockages: depression, brain fog and sleep problems.
One way to unblock your third eye is through Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing). To see a quick demo check out this video on youtube: Easy Nadi Shodhana | Pranayama Practice - YouTube
Here are two poses for opening the third eye :
Childs Pose:
1. From all fours sit back onto your heels with the tops of the feet facing the floor and your knees together, then let your belly and chest rest on the thighs.
2. The forehead can rest on the floor to stimulate the third eye. Arms either extended forward or resting alongside the body.
3. Relax for a minute or two.
Downward Facing Dog:
You can easily come into Downward Dog from child’s pose.
1. Move to Table Top/all fours with hands and knees on the mat. Spread the palms wide, stack the shoulders over wrists. ·
2. Then lift the hips up and back to a upside down V shape.
3. Aim to straighten the spine and stretch heels toward the earth. Bend knees if needed.
And lastly, a simple way to add synergy to the above steps to clear the third eye is to integrate one of the following essential oils into your practice: Lavender, Frankincense or Sandalwood. If you have one of these oils handy, mix 2 to 3 drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil (like jojoba oil) and rub between the palms of your hands and breathe in the scents. You may also choose to dip your finger into the mixture and apply a small amount between the area between your brows.
